Jubilee Celebrations 1977

How Eastling celebrated
The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Jubilee fund-raising activities

Eastling's decision to celebrate Jubilee Year was made at a meeting called by the Parish Council on 16th February 1977 at Eastling School, when a committee was formed to organise the raising of funds for the local celebration of Jubilee Day.

The committee, under the chairmanship of Norman Neaves, was made up of Dorothy Abraham, John Coultrip, John Davies, Joan Dodd, Roger Eagleton, Betty Eley, Don Eley, Rod Fraser, Janette Meara, Bob Neaves, Marina Neaves, Jean Payne, Gill Wallace, Jimmy West, and Michael Wright. It immediately set about the task of briefing every household in the parish on its aims and activities.

The programme subsequently devised was as diverse as it was entertaining, and included the following:

  • Coffee mornings/evenings at the Police House.
  • Dress Party at The Cherries, Newnham Lane.
  • Musical Concert by the Young People.
  • Morris Dancing display and Country Dancing by Eastling schoolchildren at the Carpenter's Arms.

From the Souvenir Booklet

The following articles featured in the 1977 Silver Jubilee Souvenir brochure:

Eastling, a hamlet of delight

"Eastling, a hamlet of delight in the high country of the North Downs, every year at the beginning of May the shingled spire of the Church standing like a ship's mast rising from a sea of foam. All around are cherry trees."

So wrote Arthur Mee in 1936, a visitor of yesterday. What of 1977? What of change? What of today?

The cherry trees have gone, opening up distant views and leaving open fields where the gulls fly in to follow the plough but the ancient yew still stands hard by the Church door shading a patch of the lawn-like churchyard..................... more....

The Eastling Jubilee of 1861

The village's great day in history came on 11th July 1861 when the Eastling Friendly Society celebrated its own Jubilee. It was an event, recorded in the newspaper of the day "which for years will furnish pleasing reminiscences to the inhabitants of the retired and peaceful village of Eastling."

It is hard to imagine that our "retired and peaceful village" was once the instigator of a movement that was to spread throughout the county, but such was the success of the Eastling Friendly Society. It was founded in 1812 and organised for the mutual benefit of the working men of the village. The concept grew to other villages and within 24 years the Society had become the "United Men of Kent Friendly Society."........... more....
